Due to the quick and drastic weather changes, many Bear River High School students have dealt with harsh allergies, causing stress and discomfort in the classroom.

For the past few months, Bear River High School has experienced rain showers and unexpected snow. We all have been wondering when the weather would finally fit the season. The weather quickly switched over the past few weeks as we went from highs of 40 degrees to highs of 87 degrees. Now the sun has begun to shine and the flowers have begun to bloom.

Many students have allergy medication to alleviate their symptoms, but some kids do not and feel that inside the classroom. Jocelyn McKinley describes her discomfort due to allergies.

“I hate allergies. I hate them a lot, I can’t breathe and my eyes hurt. In the classroom, it affects me badly. I have a tendency to rub my eyes a lot because they burn and then they get swollen shut then I can’t see,” McKinley said. I have to put my head down and rest my eyes. My sniffling is bad and it’s embarrassing. I also have to take a lot of medication for it.”

Similarly McKinley, Sarah DeSart has been struggling with her allergies as well.

“I get allergies pretty bad every year when springtime comes around and this year especially. It’s pretty rough. It affects me in the classroom because I get pretty groggy and then I’m just sitting there trying to focus. I get really congested and feel gross. So, it’s not great,” DeSart said.

Many have reported their allergy symptoms are more intense this year compared to before.

“I feel like my allergies are much worse this year than in other years in the past. I usually get mine in the summer but now I am getting them in the spring which is definitely not normal for me”, said DeSart. “I’ve also noticed my eyes are constantly swollen and it’s super annoying. This week is also the talent show and at the beginning of the week, I lost my voice but I just got it back so hopefully I don’t lose it again.”

Allergies have affected students negatively and disrupted the classroom. Hopefully allergy season comes to an end soon and our Bruins start to feel better.
