The Girl’s Golf team is getting ready to tee off for their 2017 season.
All the students on the girl’s golf team this year are returning players, so many believe that being so comfortable with each other will help them to play better. They know each other’s strengths and weaknesses, and they’re hoping that this familiarity will be the key to becoming PVL champions once more.
Sophomore Dominique Peter explained what her goals are for the upcoming season.
“I think my main goal is just to try and improve my score overall,” she said. “ … our goal is to be PVL champions.”
Junior Madison Templeton commented about what specific strengths the team has that will help them reach that goal.
“I think we’re really good at putting,” Templeton said. “Actually, we’re good at everything. We’re awesome.”
Golf Coach Gayne Nakano spoke about what he thinks the team’s strengths are.
“We have strong players,” he said. “Hannah Prosser was league MVP two years ago and I think she was second last year. Kalei Owen was all-league and so was Dominique Peter as a freshman last year. So we have a lot of returning players with a lot of experience and I think that’s our biggest strength.”
However, no matter how good a team is, there’s always a lot to improve on. Senior Serenity Edwards, felt that the team could be closer.
“I definitely think since it’s more of an individual sport rather than a team.” Edwards said. “We don’t have a lot of team bonding, therefore our team isn’t close, so I think this year we can really work on having a closer team and just being more of friends than just teammates.”
Other players, such as Peter, mentioned certain places in the game where some players are weak on and could use improvement.
“I think the team could improve on practice,” Peter said. “I guess we’re kinda weak on chipping,”
Coach Nakano shared his goals for the season this year.
“The main goal is to have everybody play the best Golf they can, and if that happens, I think we’re gonna have a pretty good chance at winning the league this year,” Nakano said.
