Now that it’s Winter at Bear River, the Varsity girls are kicking off a new soccer season.
Soccer used to be a Fall sport, but in recent years it has been moved to Winter, the wettest season of the year. Despite the challenges this season carries, many Bruins have chosen to continue playing, and have high hopes about the season ahead of them.
“I think we’re gonna do great and freshmen are gonna learn more skills,” Junior and Defensive Midfielder Brenna Dickson said.
Senior and Center Defender Abby Weir agreed with Dickson about the team’s prospects.
“I am not sure … but I think there is a lot of potential,” she said.
Sophomore and Striker Grace Van Winkle reminisced about last year, and said that she was curious about how the team would compare this year.
“I’m most excited for winning games, even though we did pretty good last year,” Van Winkle said. “It’s always good to improve.”
Head Coach John Hubacz talked about some of the roadblocks the girls might encounter, and how he’s planning to overcome them.
“Winter soccer is very difficult, short hours, inclement weather, but we welcome the challenge,” Coach Hubacz said. “Soccer can be played in just about any weather conditions, so we will train in those conditions and prepare our girls.”
Coach Hubacz said that he was excited for his new position as head coach.
“As a first year head coach, I can’t wait to work with the girls this year,” he said.
Weir mentioned many things she is looking forward to this season, from being a senior player, to having a closer sports family, to doing well and winning, but she mainly talked about how she is looking forward to having new people join the soccer community this year.
“I am … excited to have a new experience with new people and coaches,” Weir said.
