The 2020-2021 Bear River Varsity Football team is putting in a lot of work despite the difficult Covid infested times we’re all been living in. The team is preparing for next season with high hopes but are still hindered by COVID restrictions.
Varsity Head Coach Scott Savoie expresses pride in his team for their perseverance. Savoie also comments on how the team is looking in preseason.
“We have been practicing since August twice a week. Team looks good! I’m impressed with their resiliency and attitude. They are working hard.”
Savoie talks about the COVID precautions they have been taking in practice.
“We can’t have any contract as of yet,” he said. “Hopefully that changes soon because we are slated to start official practice on December 7.”
Sophomore running back Anders Torgerson explains how the practices are going on this fall.
“Practice is [very] different, and it’s weird that we have to wear masks and take precautions,” Torgerson said. “But I know that’s what we have to do so we do it.”
Torgerson also comments on how the defense is shaping up.
“The defense is looking solid and getting better everyday,” he said.
Senior defensive end Warren Davis elaborates further on what the defense is looking like during practice.
“Our defense is strong and I feel like we have the potential to be the best defense in Bear River history,” said Davis.
Davis also remarks on how the team is looking with COVID restricted practices.
“Although we have a great team, COVID makes it feel almost impossible. We work as hard as we can yet there are a lot of rules holding us back,” said Davis. “We can’t touch each other and we couldn’t even be within six feet of each other until recently. We still have to have a mask on at all times. [But] I feel like if there’s any team to make it out of this for the better it’s us.”
Senior wide receiver Justin McKim feels that the offensive side of the ball is looking solid during practice, but expresses his frustration with COVID protocols holding the team back, nonetheless, glad the team can continue practicing.
“It’s hard and annoying,” McKim said. “But I’m grateful we can practice and just bottom line [I’m] happy we can get out there.”
Senior kicker Cade Torgerson feels that despite the difficulties, his team is doing well in the preseason.
“The team is looking good and everyone is working hard to get ready for the winter season,” said Torgerson.
Torgerson comments on the change of practice in these odd times.
“The practices have gotten better as we can now run the ball with masks,” Torgerson said. “But it’s challenging not being able to touch each other.”
The Bruin football program perseveres with confidence through this odd season that is now right around the corner. Both sides of the ball are prepared to play and feel ready to go in the system.
