Jeremy Kerr has filled the position that former head coach Tanner Mathias used to occupy, taking over as head coach of the Bear River varsity football team. During a football meeting, Kerr spoke about how the practices might change during the football season.
During practice, Kerr will be switching fellow Bear River teacher Michael Weaver to a more all-around coach instead of mainly just junior varsity. He is also going to be leading the Zero Period weights for football players for team building and preparation.
When asked about what he wants to accomplish with the team, Kerr said that he wants to help the players develop how they play and work together.
“My main goals are to develop the team both on and off the field helping players grow as athletes and as people,” Kerr said.
Some things that he said wouldn't change would be their commitment to excellence.
“I know the strong foundation this program is built on, and we’re going to continue that tradition,” Kerr said. “We’ll focus on discipline, teamwork and playing the game the right way.”
Another of his goals is to develop good people through the lessons that football teaches the players. Also, to make sure that the players know that they are valued.
“I want our players to know they’re valued—not just as athletes, but as people.”
Kerr said that when players feel better, they play better — this is something that he believes is key to having the players at their peak.
The decision that Mathais had to make to leave was not an easy one.
The reason was that he needed to finish up his teaching credentials and coaching the football team was a year-round job.
Athletic Director Jeff Bickmore, who shared an office with Mathias will miss his officemate.
“He was awesome, he did a great job here and we’re sad to see him go,” Bickmore said.
However, the decision to leave was something that Mathias had to make and they left on good terms according to Bickmore.
