On May 29, Bear River is hosting its very first variety show. This show will be completely run by the students in the theater class.
“It is May 29th at 7 p.m. at the theater. It's a pay what you can event. It is an award variety show,” says Carey McCray, the drama teacher.
This show is different from other shows done by the pro drama class, because it is a bunch of scenes put together.
“It’s a lot of things, really. It feels kind of like an abstract painting where it’s just like a lot of stuff coming together. There's a lot of stuff from musicals. Someone's doing Heathers, and just a lot of really popular pieces and a few people got a chance to write scenes,” said sophomore Taylor Shimamoto.
The showcase will have funny topics, more serious topics, and some of the students are even taking on directing instead of their normal roles as actors.
“It’s a good way to just see all the skills that our school has to offer, especially in the drama program,” continued Shimamoto. “It gives drama students a lot more opportunity to experiment with new things because a lot of us have never directed or done behind the scenes work. So it's just a really cool opportunity,”.
A couple of the scenes in this showcase were even written by students in the pro drama class.
“I wanted to do something like a funny interrogation,” says junior Payton Garten. “I thought it’d be fun to do a good cop bad cop, but for a stupid reason. It’s called The Stolen Parking Spot and it's about these two girls who are interrogating a classmate because one of their parking spots is stolen.”
Along with it being the last showcase of the year it will also be an award ceremony for the pro drama student and tech crew.
“It’s also an award ceremony, so we will be giving out drama awards,” said McCray. “There will be some production awards, for the crew and actors. I came up with the idea after asking people what they were interested in. We knew there was one more opportunity for the year and everyone had so many ideas so we just sort of put it all together.”
Students that are free on May 29 and want to come support our school's drama class, come stop by!
