Recently, the Bear River Soccer team has announced that soccer will be moving to the fall season instead of staying in winter. This also means that they are switching leagues.Tanner Roberts, coach for the boys soccer team, explains why he is deciding to make this tough decision.
“We haven’t won a league game since 2021. We have had lots of competitive games, but we needed a reset and played schools with similar skills to us.”
Roberts also said the winter weather was affecting the team. “We had to reschedule some games last season because of the rain, and now we won’t have to worry about the weather as much.”The switch to a different season does have a few downsides. One of the boys soccer players, Derek Fernandez, says how he and his teammates now have to choose between soccer or the fall sport they were already playing.“Students on the team who do two sports would have to pick between just one or try to do both. I am personally quitting cross country to do soccer.”Roberts also acknowledges this as well.
Bear River will be in the Central Valley League with Forest Lake, John Adams, Sacramento Waldorf, SAEL, Encina, Futures and Victory Christian.
“I know a lot of players who played fall sports, and now have to choose between soccer and another sport, whether it's football or another sport. I understand that's tough and a tough position to be in, and I know students who won’t be a part of the soccer program because they are going to be playing another sport.”Some athletes like the change, but are sad that they will have to pick a soccer or a sport they were playing in fall. Jon Gysen, another soccer player, says, “ I feel like most of the team is happy about it, though it will suck because some students will choose a different fall sport instead of soccer.”
Fernandez agrees that there are mixed emotions about the decision/
“I like it and don’t like it at the same time. I get to play soccer earlier, but it's going to be so hot, though we don’t have to play in the rain.”With this huge switch, we will have to wait and see how much this will affect the Bear River Soccer team and their season.
