Ever wanted to get a quick snack from Bear River High School’s snack bar only to discover that you can’t use cash anymore? It’s a bummer knowing that you can’t buy your favorite snacks anymore because of one little thing.
This is why the snack bar should change the payment policy back to having the option of cash pay because it’s easier for students to buy the snacks they love rather than having to use a credit card that lots of students don't have access to.
Although some tudents are bummed that the payment policy has changed, the school only changed from the option of cash to credit only because of the new company the school is under called Community Roots.
Kitchen Production Manager Gale Jones has no power to change the payment policy or food options for the school, as these decisions are solely made by Community Roots.
“The food service is no longer employed by the district, we are now employed by Community Roots and they chose to do credit only,” said Jones.
Jones does not know why the company decided to make that change, but she has an idea.
“I would imagine it’s because of not wanting to deal with money and deposits everyday like we were doing before,” Jones said. “We'd have to do a daily deposit with the cash and I'm assuming that's probably one less thing that they'd have to do daily.”
Sure, this might be an easier approach for the company, but the negative effects outway the positive. It’s not just the students losing something.
“We have had a big drop in sales and I actually brought that to their attention in hopes that we could maybe get the cash option back,” said Jones.
Student voices matter. Things such as this shouldn’t change without the students knowing first, or even having a say in the matter.
Jones can only do so much to get the cash option back.
“I have definitely tried on my end to try and get the cash option back, but I don't know if they're going to budge or not,” said Jones.
Students, if you want to be able to enjoy snacks at the amazing snack bar then we need to do something. Nothing will change unless we try.
